What Is Şile Cloth? The Nearly 200-Year-Old Turkish Cotton Fabric from the Black Sea
We continue a nearly 200-year-old production tradition.
Şile Cloth (Şile Bezi in Turkish) is a handwoven cotton textile from Şile, a small town on Türkiye's Black Sea coast, about an hour from Istanbul. It is not a fabric name in the way “poplin” or “canvas” are — it is a place name, tied to a specific weaving tradition and a specific set of finishing steps that have been passed down through generations of local weavers, most of them women.
What makes it different from ordinary cotton
Plain cotton fabric can be made almost anywhere, on almost any loom, finished with almost any chemical process. Şile Cloth is defined by how it is made, not just what it is made from:
- Cotton yarn, hand-woven or woven on traditional looms in Şile
- Naturally starched before weaving to strengthen the thread
- Washed in Black Sea water
- Dried on Şile's sand
This combination gives the finished cloth its particular character: soft rather than crisp, breathable, slightly textured, and already “broken in” by the time it reaches you — because the sea and sand have already done part of that work.
A recognized regional textile, not a generic term
In Türkiye, Şile Bezi is a textile with an official geographic indication — a legal recognition, similar in spirit to Irish Linen or Harris Tweed, that ties the name to the place and the process. In practice, this also means the term gets used loosely: a lot of what's sold as “Şile bezi” in general markets is industrially produced cotton with no real connection to Şile at all. We write more about how to tell the difference in a separate guide.
How LIVANCI works with it
We call our production approach the Root Method — a name for the same body of traditional knowledge, applied to modern silhouettes. We work in two weights, TOK (denser, more structured) and İNCE (lighter, more fluid) — explained here — and cut them into pieces meant for everyday wear, not display: dresses, kimonos, shirts, trousers, for women and men.
Şile Cloth asks for breath more than form. That's not an aesthetic preference — it's closer to a production ethic, and it's the starting point for everything we make.
