How to Care for Handwoven Şile Cloth Garments
Şile Cloth is a natural, hand-finished fabric, and it rewards a bit of care — not because it's fragile, but because how you treat it affects how it ages. Done right, it softens over time rather than wearing out.
Washing
Wash in cool or lukewarm water, either by hand or on a gentle machine cycle. Avoid hot water — heat is the main cause of shrinking and stiffening in natural cotton weaves. A mild, natural detergent is enough; skip fabric softener, which tends to coat natural fibers rather than actually softening them.
Drying
Air dry whenever possible, ideally flat or on a hanger out of direct, intense sun. Tumble drying on high heat is the single most common cause of a handwoven cotton piece losing its shape or feeling rougher over time — if you must machine dry, use a low, gentle setting.
Ironing
Şile Cloth wrinkles less than linen by design, so you'll likely need to iron less often. When you do, a warm (not hot) iron on the reverse side, or a light steam, is usually enough — the natural texture of the weave doesn't need to be pressed completely flat.
Storage
Store folded or loosely hung in a dry space. Natural cotton can hold moisture longer than synthetic blends, so avoid packing it away damp or in an airtight bag for long periods.
What to expect over time
Some softening and slight fading with wash and wear is normal for a fabric finished with natural, low-intervention methods rather than synthetic treatments — it's part of what makes handwoven cotton feel different from mass-produced fabric a year in. If a piece ever tears or loses shape unexpectedly early, that's worth flagging to us directly rather than treating as normal wear.
