Root Method

A production philosophy shaped by nature

The Root Method is LIVANCI’s contemporary articulation of the time-honored knowledge behind Şile Fabric.
It brings a fabric culture rooted in natural processes into conversation with a refined design sensibility.

Şile Fabric is a natural cotton textile woven along the Black Sea coast. What sets it apart is not only the purity of its yarn, but the quiet dialogue its making sustains with its environment.

It is woven.
It is washed in sea water.
It dries upon mineral-rich sand.

Here, machinery does not impose direction; nature accompanies theprocess.

Boiling

The first stage begins with 100% natural cotton yarn hanks gently
boiled according to traditional methods — a process known as natural sizing.
Unlike chemical and synthetic alternatives, natural sizing remains inherently
skin-friendly. It aligns the microscopic fibers within the yarn while
strengthening their resistance to friction during weaving, reducing fiber loss.
Each naturally sized thread becomes more than material; it carries the imprint
of time, labor, and patient attention.

Weaving

At the heart of the Root Method lies the transformation from yarn to fabric. Each strand is carefully tensioned, aligned, and woven on traditional looms. Industrial weaving machines operate at high speed and under intense pressure, altering the nature of fibers and flattening the character of the cloth. Traditional weaving, by contrast, avoids mechanical strain. Fibers interlock without force, remaining true to their natural structure. The rhythmic meeting of warp and weft under the guidance of human hands preserves the fabric’s innate elasticity. Subtle variations and micro-irregularities appear across each meter — discreet signatures of authenticity and craftsmanship.

Washing

In the third stage, the woven fabrics are washed along the shores of Şile, in the cold, mineral-rich waters of the Black Sea. The sea’s mineral composition does more than cleanse; it supports the internal structure of the fibers. Iodine offers a naturally antiseptic effect on the textile surface, contributing to lasting hygiene. The cold, oxygenated character of the water gently shocks the fabric, limiting the proliferation of microorganisms and helping preserve the fibers’ natural form. Salt water subtly tightens the organic fibers, introducing resilience and vitality. Throughout this stage, the textile encounters no chemical detergents, soaps, or bleaching agents; it is refined solely by the sea’s elemental force. Here, the fabric is both physically purified and prepared to carry its distinctive feel.

Drying

In the final stage of the Root Method, the washed fabrics are laid
upon the natural sands of Şile to dry. Şile sand contains a high concentration
of silica minerals. In this natural setting, the fabric reaches equilibrium
without exposure to artificial heat, shaped only by the presence of air and
sand. During this process, the textile breathes; the last traces of moisture
and ionic excess gradually dissipate. It is at this stage that the fabric seems
to settle fully into its character.

DESIGN
Within the Root Method, design is timeless, restrained, and guided by necessity.

In conventional fashion systems, design is often conceived independently from fabric: a silhouette is determined, and a textile is selected to comply.

At LIVANCI, the relationship is reversed. Design begins by accepting the nature of the cloth.

Original Şile Fabric produced through the Root Method does not lend itself to heavily structured, rigid, or containment-driven “popular” constructions. Such forms contradict the textile’s character.

For this reason, each design is developed in dialogue with the fabric itself. Every piece in our collections preserves the integrity of the cloth, remains faithful to the human body, and emerges from a balance uniquely its own.
