Inside the Root Method: How Şile Cloth Is Woven, Sea-Washed and Sand-Dried
Root Method is today's name for a body of production knowledge that has continued for centuries. It isn't a marketing invention — it's our name for the sequence of steps that turns raw cotton yarn into Şile Cloth, largely unchanged from how it's been done in Şile for generations.
1. Starching the yarn
Before anything is woven, the cotton yarn is strengthened with a natural starching process — boiled in a flour-and-water mixture that adds strength and abrasion resistance for weaving. Boils. Strengthens. Transforms. It's a simple step, but it's where the character of the finished cloth begins.
2. Warping and weaving
The strengthened yarn is set on traditional and semi-mechanical looms in Şile and woven into cloth. This is where the weight decision happens — a tighter, fuller weave becomes TOK; a looser, lighter one becomes İNCE. Both are woven from the same starting yarn; the difference is entirely in how it's set on the loom.
3. Washing in the Black Sea
The woven cloth is washed in the mineral-rich waters of the Black Sea at Şile. This step is specific to this region — it isn't a generic “natural wash,” it's this particular coastline, and it's a large part of why Şile Cloth softens the way it does rather than staying stiff.
4. Drying on Şile sand
Rather than machine-drying, the cloth is laid out to dry on Şile's sand and finished in the sun. This slow, open-air drying is part of what gives the fabric its soft, slightly textured hand-feel before it's even cut into a garment.
Why we don't rush this
Every one of these steps could, in theory, be replaced with a faster industrial equivalent. We don't do that, and it's the reason our production runs are limited rather than continuous. Şile Cloth asks for breath more than form — and breath takes time. If a piece feels expensive for what looks like a simple silhouette, this is where that comes from: not embellishment, but process.
