Linea Shirt Dress in structured TOK-weight Şile Cloth

TOK or İNCE? A Buyer's Guide to Choosing the Right Şile Cloth Weight

If you've spent any time on our site, you've probably noticed we don't just sell “cotton.” Şile Cloth comes in two distinct weights, and choosing between them is less about size and more about how you want a piece to move.

TOK and İNCE aren't fabric grades — they're two different weaving decisions, each suited to a different kind of day.

TOK: the denser weave

TOK Şile Cloth is woven tighter and fuller. The threads sit closer together, which gives the fabric more structure and a slightly more substantial hand-feel. It holds its shape through a full day of wear, drapes with a bit more body, and works year-round rather than just in peak summer heat.

If you gravitate toward pieces with clean, architectural lines — something like our Linea Shirt Dress or the tailored ease of the Sentinel Long Dress — TOK is doing quiet work underneath that structure.

İNCE: the lighter weave

İNCE is woven thinner and looser, and it shows. The fabric is lighter in the hand, moves more freely, and breathes more easily against skin in high heat. It's the weight we reach for when the goal is maximum airflow — resort days, humid climates, anything worn against bare skin for hours.

Pieces like the Sora Kimono and the Veil Scarf Detail Dress lean into this lightness — open silhouettes that need a fabric that moves with them, not against them.

Neither is “better”

This is the part that's easy to get wrong: TOK isn't the premium option and İNCE isn't the delicate one. They're two answers to two different questions. TOK asks “how do I want this to hold its shape.” İNCE asks “how do I want this to feel against my skin at 34°C.” Both are hand-woven, sea-washed, and sand-dried the same way, through the same Root Method — the difference is entirely in how tightly the yarn was set on the loom.

A useful shortcut: if you're buying for structure — for a piece that reads more tailored, more “put together” — reach for TOK. If you're buying for a beach day, a resort trip, or a climate where breathability matters more than shape, reach for İNCE.

One more thing worth knowing

Şile Cloth asks for breath more than form. That's not a styling preference on our part — it's closer to a production ethic. Every piece we make starts from the question of how the fabric wants to move, not the other way around. Whichever weight you choose, that's the same principle underneath it.

If you're still unsure which weight suits the piece you have in mind, get in touch before you order — we'd rather help you pick right the first time than have you guess.
